Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms of expressive speech acts found in the anime Barakamon. The focus of this research is to identify the types of expressive speech acts and to analyze their delivery forms based on literal and non-literal meanings. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method, with data sources derived from the utterances of characters in the anime Barakamon. Data collection techniques were carried out through the listening method and note-taking technique, while data analysis used the pragmatic equivalence method. The results of the study show that 65 expressive speech act data were found, consisting of 14 data of thanking, 13 data of apologizing, 25 data of complimenting, 4 data of congratulating, 6 data of complaining, and 3 data of expressing emotion. Based on the form of delivery, 36 data were found to be literal and 29 data non-literal. The literal form is used when the meaning of the utterance corresponds to its lexical meaning, while the non-literal form is understood based on the conversational context and its pragmatic function. The compliment category is the most dominant expressive speech act found in this study. The results indicate that the use of expressive speech acts in the anime Barakamon not only functions to express the speaker's feelings but also reflects social relationships, linguistic politeness, and the communication culture of Japanese society.
