Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of several factors like financial attitudes, financial knowledge, and income on financial management behavior using a mediating variable locus of control in the e-wallet user in Surabaya. This research is conclusive causality research with quantitative research data using purposive sampling and snowball sampling techniques to get samples. Data obtained by distributing online questionnaires. The sample used in this study were 202 respondents from the e-wallet user in Surabaya. The analysis technique used is the Structural Equation Model (SEM) using AMOS. The results are based on hypothesis testing that shows that financial attitudes and financial knowledge influences financial management behavior, while income and locus of control do not affect financial management behavior. It is because of the unequal distribution of respondents that dominated by women and have age between 15-24 years. The results based on mediation testing was obtained that locus of control was not able to mediate all the independent variables (financial attitude, financial knowledge, and income) to financial management behavior. This is caused by the direct effect between the locus of control as a mediating variable is not significant to financial management behavior as the dependent variable. The dominant distribution of samples is in the age range between 15-24 years is still borne by their parents so they have not been able to manage financial independence to the fullest. It was also caused by female respondents who often carried out impulsive shopping practices.

Keywords: financial attitude; financial knowledge; financial management behavior; income; locus of control.
