SUMBER DAN KEDUNG PADA NAMA DESA DI KABUPATEN MADIUN: KAJIAN ANTROPOLINGUISTIK
Abstract
The underlying phenomenon is the use of village names starting with the elements Sumber and Kedung in Madiun Regency which remain administratively, but their historical and cultural meanings are no longer fully understood by the community, especially the younger generation. The purpose of this study is to describe the naming of villages that begin with the words Sumber and Kedung through aspects of performance, indexicality and participation based on Alessandro Duranti's theory. The method used is descriptive qualitative with data in the form of eight village names: Kedungrejo, Kedungmaron, Kedungbanteng, Kedungjati, Sumberbening, Sumbersari, Sumberberbendo, and Sumbersari. Data were obtained through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of this study indicate that from the performance aspect, there are phonological variations in the writing and pronunciation of village names that are influenced by the age of the speaker, the context of use, and social situations. The older generation tends to simplify or eliminate syllables, while young people tend to maintain the pronunciation of the full form of the village name according to its writing. From an indexical perspective, the element "kedung" (river basin) indicates the presence of a deep river basin or pool, while "sumber" (source) refers to natural springs in the form of springs and wells, which are central to community life. Furthermore, village names also index cultural values through the presence of punden (traditional sacred sites), ancestral graves, myths, customary prohibitions, and local traditions. From a participatory perspective, the community and younger generations are actively involved in passing down knowledge of the origins of village names and preserving traditions as an effort to maintain village identity from generation to generation.
