Abstract

The study aims to describe the forms of private patriarchy and public patriarchy in Dian Purnomo's novel Perempuan yang Menangis kepada Bulan Hitam (The Woman Who Cries to the Black Moon) using Sylvia Walby's theory of patriarchy. The data sources are narratives and dialogues between characters in Dian Purnomo's novel Perempuan yang Menangis kepada Bulan Hitam. Data collection was conducted through reading and note-taking techniques. Data analysis used Paul Ricoeur's hermeneutic data analysis technique, which classified the findings into two areas of patriarchy, namely private patriarchy and public patriarchy, which were then linked to Sylvia Walby's six structures of patriarchy, namely wage labor, household production, culture, sexuality, violence, and the state. The data validity technique used credibility testing in the form of data triangulation. The results of the study consist (1) Private patriarchy is represented through the structures of household production, culture, sexuality, and violence, which can be seen in the dominance of men in the family who control women's bodies, life choices, education, and domestic roles. (2) Public patriarchy is represented through household production, sexual culture, violence, and the state, which can be seen in the legitimacy of traditional culture, control of female sexuality, gender-based violence, and weak state protection for victims.

Keywords: private patriarchy, public patriarchy, marriage by capture tradition, gender discrimination, Sylvia Walby.
