Abstract

The initial reading ability of children in group A of Tunas Bangsa Kindergarten is uneven, some have not and have recognized vowels and consonants, some can read syllables and some have even read storybooks fluently. The purpose of the research study was to determine the reading ability of children in group A of Tunas Bangsa Banyuurip Kindergarten. This type of research is descriptive qualitative through observation, interviews and documentation with analysis techniques according to Miles and Huberman. The results showed that seven out of eleven children had not met the standard of reading ability for 4-5 years old. This is because the book method applied for beginning reading is not in accordance with the stages of beginning reading according to Chall. Therefore, teachers need to find methods that strengthen the introduction of vowels and letter shapes so that children can read and be correct in mentioning sounds. Future researchers should make modules that are in accordance with the stages of early reading in early childhood in the type of development research.
