Abstract

The background of this research is the prevalence of 3-4 year old children at PPT Kasih Bunda, Sawahan District, Surabaya City, who exhibit underdeveloped speaking skills, particularly in expressing their desires and limited

participation in classroom learning processes. Researchers chose puppet media to address these issues due to its creative, effective, and engaging nature for children. This research aims to examine the effectiveness of storytelling methods with puppet media in enhancing the speaking skills of early childhood at PPT Kasih Bunda, Sawahan District. Speaking skills are crucial for children's development, influencing their ability to communicate, interact, and understand their environment. However, many 3-4 year old children at PPT Kasih Bunda, Sawahan District, Surabaya City, still struggle to develop their speaking skills. This research employs a qualitative approach with a classroom action research (CAR) design. The subjects were 3-4 year old children in Group B at PPT Kasih Bunda, Sawahan District, Surabaya City. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted using a descriptive qualitative method. The results indicate that storytelling methods with puppet media are effective in improving the speaking skills of early childhood. This is evidenced by the increase in vocabulary, sentence construction abilities, and children's confidence in speaking. The engaging and interactive nature of puppet media motivates children to actively participate in storytelling activities. Furthermore, the use of puppets aids children in comprehending the plot and characters, enabling them to retell stories more effectively. This research concludes that storytelling methods with puppet media can serve as an effective alternative to enhance the speaking skills of early childhood. Therefore, it is recommended that early childhood educators implement this method in their daily teaching activities. Data on the improvement in quality from Cycle I to Cycle II is evidenced by the increase in the average percentage of speaking development achievement, with details as follows: in the indicator of children speaking clearly and understandably, Cycle I showed 35%, while Cycle II increased to 87%, a 52% improvement; in the ability of children to answer questions about the story content, Cycle I showed 35%, while Cycle II increased to 87%, a 52% improvement; in the ability of children to express feelings verbally, Cycle I showed 36%, while Cycle II increased to 83%, a 47% improvement; and in the indicator of developing stories based on imagination, Cycle I showed 27%, while Cycle II increased to 82%, a 55% improvement. This demonstrates that the optimization of speaking skills in 3-4 year old children in Group B at PPT Kasih Bunda through the use of storytelling methods with puppet media experienced a significant increase, as evidenced by the improvement in the four indicators of developmental achievement.
