IMPROVING THE ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND LETTERS THROUGH LETTER MODIFICATION MEDIA IN CHILDREN AGED 5-6 YEARS

Abstract
Improving the ability to understand letters is one of the important aspects in developing basic literacy in early childhood. In Intan Kindergarten Surabaya. efforts to improve this ability are carried out through the use of letter modification media. This media was chosen because it is interactive, interesting, and in accordance with the learning characteristics of early childhood who tend to like game-based learning. The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of letter modification media in increasing teacher activity, child activity, and children's ability to mention familiar letter symbols. The results showed a significant increase from cycle 1 to cycle 2. Teacher activity increased from 62% in cycle 1 to 78% in cycle 2, with an increase of 16%. Children's activity also increased from 69% in cycle 1 to 82% in cycle 2, with an increase of 13%. Furthermore, children's ability to mention familiar letter symbols experienced a very significant spike, namely from 70% in cycle 1 to 82% in cycle 2, with an increase of 12%. Based on the results of the research and discussion in this study, it can be concluded that the ability to understand letters of group B children at Intan Kindergarten Surabaya can be improved using letter modification media in the learning process by each child bringing/holding a bottle cap directly and playing with it according to the teacher's instructions, namely mentioning familiar letter symbols, distinguishing letters that are almost the same, and completing letters according to the picture.
