Abstract

Early Childhood Education (ECE) is an important stage in developing various aspects of children’s growth, including language and early literacy skills. For children aged 5–6 years, learning interest is a key factor influencing their engagement in learning activities. However, in practice, low interest in early reading is still commonly found, as seen in children’s lack of attention, enthusiasm, and participation. This condition is often caused by less varied teaching methods and uninteresting learning media. This study aims to analyze teachers’ strategies in implementing word card games to improve children’s interest in beginning reading, evaluate the improvement of their learning interest, and identify supporting and inhibiting factors. The subjects of this study are Group B children at TK WAP Surabaya. Word cards are used through play-based activities such as matching pictures with words, arranging words, and group games. This media is expected to create enjoyable learning and increase children’s attention, participation, and enthusiasm in early reading activities.
