Utilization of Recycled Asphalt in the Manufacture of Semi-Rigid Composite Pavements

Road pavement conditions in Indonesia face significant challenges due to high traffic loads, causing premature damage such as cracks and deformation. To address this issue, Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) technology is considered an environmentally friendly and economical solution. This study aims to evaluate the effect of RAP addition on the characteristics of a composite semi-rigid pavement mixture, which combines the advantages of flexible and rigid pavements through the grouted macadam method. The study was conducted experimentally in the laboratory, with Marshall parameter tests such as stability, flow, density, Marshall Quotient (MQ), and permeability. The RAP mixture composition was varied from 0% to 25% and filled with cement paste using open gradation based on AAPA standards (2004). The applied theory includes the design principles of composite semi-rigid pavements as well as the concepts of permeability and stability of the mixed material. The results showed that the maximum stability value (1,004.43 kg), the flow value within the optimum limit (2.3 mm), the maximum density value (2.16 gr/cm³), and a high MQ (803.55 kg/mm). Permeability tends to decrease with increasing RAP, but remains within the acceptable range for grouted asphalt. In conclusion, the use of RAP in semi-rigid composite pavement mixtures effectively improves stability and MQ, and has the potential to be applied as a high-quality and sustainable road surface layer
