Abstract

The main focus of this study is to describe the types of metaphors used and to analyze the meanings of metaphors as well as the varieties of collective connotations formed in the song lyrics of the album Love All Serve All by Fujii Kaze. The theoretical foundations used in this study include Stephen Ullmann’s classification of metaphors, the analysis of vehicle, topic, and grounds proposed by Knowles and Moon, and Tarigan’s classification of collective connotative meanings.

The results of the study show that 81 metaphorical data were found. The types of metaphors found include 58 data of concrete-to-abstract metaphors, 15 data of anthropomorphic metaphors, 5 data of synesthetic metaphors, and 3 data of animal metaphors. Meanwhile, based on the classification of collective connotative meanings, the data are dominated by positive connotations, with a total of 40 data consisting of 26 data of elevated connotations and 14 data of friendly connotations. Negative connotations were found in 33 data, consisting of 22 data of unpleasant connotations, 3 data of rough connotations, and 8 data of strong connotations. Neutral connotations were found in 8 data, all of which belong to school-based connotations. These findings indicate that metaphors play an important role in conveying certain experiences while also constructing reflective and emotional messages.
