THE CORRELATION BETWEEN ANIME WATCHING HABITS AND THE ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND WAKAMONO KOTOBA (JAPANESE SLANG) AMONG STUDENTS OF THE JAPANESE LANGUAGE EDUCATION PROGRAM

Abstrak

This study aims to describe the correlation between anime watching habits and the ability to understand wakamono kotoba (Japanese slang) among students of the Japanese Language Education Study Program at Universitas Negeri Surabaya. This study employed a quantitative correlational method. Data were collected through questionnaires and tests administered to 30 respondents selected using a purposive sampling technique.

The results indicated that there was no significant correlation between anime watching habits and the ability to understand wakamono kotoba (correlation coefficient value of 0.035; significance of 0.855). This leads to the conclusion that there is no correlation between the two variables. Based on the questionnaire results, students' anime watching activity remains a passive form of entertainment. Therefore, it is advised that students transform their passive watching habit into an active listening practice, allowing the exposure to wakamono kotoba from the media to be better internalized.
