Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out which euphemism phrases occur in the three speech texts of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on climate change and to describe the function of the euphemism phrases in the three speech texts of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on climate change. This research is a descriptive qualitative study with research data in the form of three speech texts extracted from the official website of the German government (bundesregierung.de and diplo.de) and using the method of listening and recording. The data sources used are words, phrases, and sentences that are indicators of euphemism in the three texts of Chancellor Olaf Scholz's speeches on climate change. The data were analyzed in seven steps, namely (1) identifying euphemism phrases belonging to the form of euphemism according to Scholz's theory, (2) entering all identified euphemism phrases into the data table, (3) marking the euphemism phrases occurring in each speech text, with codes according to the forum of the speech text (WEF or PCD or UN), (4) numbering of the occurring euphemism phrases according to the number of phrases in the three speech texts of Olaf Scholz on climate change, (5) summary of the analyzed data, (6) descriptive presentation of the results of the data analysis, (7) in case of similarities in the form of the euphemism, simultaneous description of the researcher.
