Abstract

This research aims to analyze Vladimir Propp's narrative function in fairy tales by German writer Karl Joseph Simrock. The fairy tales by Simrock that will be studied include the titles Acht Pfennige täglich (Eight Pennies a Day), Der eiserne Johann (John the Iron Man), and Der verwünschte Esel (The Cursed Donkey). This fairy tale work was chosen because it focuses on fictional or unreal stories but has a meaningful message that readers can learn from. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with a data collection method, namely reading and recording elements of the narrative function of each predetermined title. The fairy tales mentioned previously were used as the primary data source in this research. In the fairy tale entitled Acht Pfennige täglich, 10 narrative functions can be found, namely initial situation, crime, prohibition, violation, middle way, obtaining information, reconnaissance, punishment, needs fulfilled, task completed, and departure (α γ1 δ1 B1 ξ 1 ε 1 U1 γ2 B2 K1 γ3 ε 2 B3 γ4 N1 ↑1). In the fairy tale Der eiserne Johann you can find a number of 11 narrative functions, namely initial situation, departure, arrival, first function of donor, deception, involvement, crime, fight, signification, acceptance of magical elements, middle way, and reconnaissance (α ↑1 ↓1 ↓2 D1 η1 θ1 ↑2 ↓2 A1 H1 ↓4 I 1 F1 B1 ε 1 F2 F3). The fairy tale with the title Der verwünschte Esel has a narrative function of 5 narrative functions, namely introduction to the initial situation, v prohibition, departure, deception, reconnaissance, and arrival (α γ1 ↑1 η1 ε 1 ↓1 ↓2 ↑2 ↓3).
