Abstract

A Film is an audio-visual artwork in the form of a series of moving images that create a story and convey specific messages. In films, communication between characters is realized through utterances, which in linguistic studies relate to the field of pragmatics, particularly speech act theory. A speech act is the use of language to convey meaning while simultaneously performing a social action. This research uses the German romantic drama seriesĀ Die Kaiserin, episode 5 on Netflix, as the data source, as this episode marks a turning point in the story that affects the main characters communication and the power of Empress Sophie. The data are classified into three types of speech acts: locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary, using a descriptive qualitative method and note-taking technique. The results show that locutionary acts consist of various sentence forms, illocutionary acts include five types of speech functions, and perlocutionary acts display the effect of utterances o the interlocutor in the form of responses, action, or changes in attitude.
