Abstract

ABSTRACT

This research focused on inner conflicts of the main character, Paul Baeumer, on movies “Im Westen Nichts Neues” by Edward Berger. This movie adapted from a classic novel by Erich Maria Remarque, depict the deep psychological impact in the cause of World War 1, to occur question on how traumatic experience could affect individual mental condition. The problem that appears in this research are: (1) What’s the cause of main character’s inner conflicts? And (2) How that inner conflicts solved? Research methodology that used is qualitative approach with descriptive analysis technique. Data collected by observation on scene, dialog, and narrative on the movie, also analized by theory of conflict that published by Lewin (2015), that include primary cause, predisposition, actual, and intensifier. Study in this research express that Paul’s inner conflict caused by interaction with a lot of complex factors, and to point out war trauma and social pressure. Beside that, this research find that Paul using various defensive psychological mechanism to overcome the conflicts he been through. Summary from this research shows that inner conflicts that comes from Paul Baeumer reflects reality of personal psychological that stuck on war situation, also the importance of psychological impact understandment caused by traumatic experience. This research expected to give contribution for psychological literrature study and in depth understandment about human conflict coming from movies.
