Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze and describe the representation of emotional regulation strategies carried out by the main character Benni, in the film Systemsprenger (System Crasher) using James Gross's emotional regulation theory approach. This film presents an intense depiction of a nine-year-old child who experienced childhood trauma and had difficulty in managing emotions adaptively. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with analysis techniques of dialogue, visual expressions, and emotional situations in the film. The results show that the character Benni experiences various emotional and social conflicts that trigger the emergence of basic emotions such as anger, fear, and sadness. In dealing with these conflicts, Benni uses two types of emotional regulation strategies, namely Antecedent-Focused-Strategy (Cognitive Reappraisal) and Response-Focused-Strategy (Expressive Suppression), with the dominance of ineffective strategies that often lead to destructive behavior. The representation of emotional regulation strategies in this film not only shows the psychological condition of the character, but also criticizes the failure of the social system in handling children with special needs. This research is expected to be a reference in the study of literary psychology and film-based children's character education.
