Abstract

This study aims to describe the image of the main female characters in two fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm, namely Jungfrau Maleen and Allerleirauh, from three main aspects: physical, psychological, and social. This research applies a qualitative method with a descriptive approach to present a deep understanding of the female characters’ portrayals in the texts. The physical image is analyzed based on Sugihastuti’s (2000:84–87) perspective, which includes the biological changes experienced by the characters, the symbolic meaning of their appearance, and the social construction of beauty standards. The psychological aspect is examined using the hardiness theory developed by Suzanne C. Kobasa (1979), which consists of three main components: commitment, control, and challenge. Meanwhile, the social aspect reflects the female characters’ positions within the family structure and the social roles attached to them in society. The results show that in Jungfrau Maleen, there are 2 physical, 6 psychological, and 2 social aspects. In Allerleirauh, there are 3 physical, 6 psychological, and 2 social aspects.

Keywords: female image, Grimm’s fairy tales.
