Abstract

This study aims to analyze and describe the denotative and connotative signs as well as the conditions that influence the formation of self-identity in the character Maik in the film Tschick directed by Fatih Akin. The research employs a qualitative descriptive approach using Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis and Elizabeth B. Hurlock’s theory of adolescent developmental psychology. Data were collected through observations of scenes, dialogues, and monologues in the film, and analyzed based on Barthes' two levels of meaning: denotative and connotative. The results reveal that Maik’s identity formation is influenced by six conditions: age maturity, peer relationships, family relationships, gender roles, creativity, and the use of names and nicknames, totaling 19 findings. The signs represented in the film reflect Maik’s emotional and social struggles, which illustrate the process of adolescent identity development. Tschick portrays a journey of self-discovery through social interaction, emotional experiences, and continuous self-reflection. This research is expected to contribute to the study of film semiotics, adolescent psychological development, and identity representation in visual media.
