Abstract

ABSTRACT

Illocutionary acts are actions contained in speech, where the speaker says something with a specific purpose and meaning, such as commanding, promising, or explaining. These illocutionary acts can be found in literary works such as the novel “Save Me” by Mona Kasten, because novels reflect communication and interaction in real life between humans. This study aims to identify the types and functions of illocutionary acts in this novel using John R. Searle's theory of illocutionary acts. This study examines how the five classifications of illocutionary acts assertive , directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative are expressed through the speech of the characters in the novel. The method used is a qualitative descriptive method with a pragmatic approach, while data collection is carried out using reading and note-taking techniques. The results show that all five types of illocutionary acts can be found in this novel. The most dominant act is expressive, which serves to express the feelings and emotions of the characters, especially those related to conflict and romantic relationships. The most frequently occurring illocutionary functions are providing information, requesting, and regretting. The analysis shows that illocutionary acts play an important role in the characterization of the characters. Pragmatically, these findings provide a deep understanding of the intentions and hidden meanings of the characters in narrative interactions.
