Abstract

This research aims to analyze the influence of the PBL learning model on the critical thinking abilities of students at SMKN 7 Surabaya. The background of this study is based on students who are passive and lack critical thinking skills in the learning process which is still dominated by the lecture method. This research uses a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental method and a non-equivalent control group design. The research sample consisted of an experimental class that used the PBL model and a control class that used lecture model learning. Data were collected through critical thinking skill tests and student response questionnaires. The data were analyzed using Independent Sample t-tests and prerequisite tests such as the Kolmogorov-Smirnov normality test and Levene’s test for homogeneity. The results showed that the implementation of the PBL model had a significant effect on improving student’s critical thinking skill. In addition, student’s responses to the PBL learning model were catogorized as good. Therefore, the PBL model can be used as an alternative learning strategy to enhace critical thinking skill of vocational high school students, particularly in the Light Vechicle Engineering program at SMKN 7 Surabaya.
