Abstract

Higher education not only demands academic achievement but also requires students’ readiness to face social and economic challenges. Limited financial support encourages many students to choose part-time work alongside their academic responsibilities. The phenomenon of students working part time continues to increase globally as well as in Indonesia, including at Universitas Negeri Surabaya (UNESA). In addition to meeting financial needs, part-time work is also chosen as a means of gaining work experience and improving career readiness. However, student part-time workers face various burdens and uncertainties, such as irregular flexible working hours, the absence of employment contracts, difficulties in time management, and the potential decline in academic performance. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the rationality of UNESA students who work part time by examining their objectives, the resources used, as well as the benefits and risks involved in their decision-making process. This research uses a qualitative approach with James S Coleman's rational choice theory as its analytical tool..
