Abstract

German is one of familiar languages studied by high school students (SMA/SMK/MA) in Indonesia. Foreign language
studies aimed to push students to have good communication skills, both orally or in writing. This explanation is
contained in the Content Standards for Primary and Secondary Education in the Regulation of Education Minister and
Culture of the Republic of Indonesia Number 21 (2016: 202). All learning activities require teaching materials. Teaching
materials used are supposed to be under the instructional rules, which contain the learning materials, methods, and
limitations (Widodo and Jasmadi, 2008: 40). In German language learning, the Erklärung book is chosen as the research

object because it is one of the textbooks used in Surabaya High School, SMAN 11 Surabaya. Every textbook or teaching
material needs to adapt to the existing 2013 curriculum. Language learning has four basic skills in this curriculum: reading,
speaking, listening, and writing. Therefore, this research focuses on writing skills. Writing skill is the ability to deliver
messages using written language as a tool or medium for communication (Suparno 2009: 13). The problem formulations in
this study are: 1. What exercises in Erklärung's book for grade 10 in the second semester correspond to writing skills in the
2013 curriculum, 2. Cognitive level of questions in each Practice Question. The limitation of the problem in this article is
to analyze the School Life theme. This study aims to find out which practice questions in Erklärung's book correspond to
the cognitive level of questions and indicator of writing skills in the 2013 curriculum. This is a qualitative descriptive
study using the documentation method. The data source in this research is taken from Erklärung's book, which contains
practice questions for writing skills in German. The research instrument is a research rubric that aims to determine
whether the learning material with the theme of School Life in the form of descriptive text in the Erklärung book follows
the 2013 curriculum for writing skills. There are 13 questions to be analyzed in this book. The aspects measured were
linguistic structure under the 2013 curriculum syllabus for class X, cognitive level of questions, and indicators of writing
skills. The result of this study shows that 13 questions correspond to the structure of the German language grade 10 and
writing indicators: Exercise1, Exercise2, Exercise3, Exercise4, Exercise 5, Exercise6, Exercise 7, Exercise 8, Exercise9,
Exercise10, Exercise11, Exercise12, and Exercise13. For the cognitive level, this study figures out that not all levels
correspond to the questions, including the C1 level: Exercise 2, Exercise 5, and Exercise 7. For C2, it consists of Excercise
1and Exercise 13. For C3: Exercise 4, Exercise 9, Exercise 10, and Exercise
11. For C5, it is Exercise 3, Exercise 8, and Exercise 12. And the last one for C6is Exercise 6.
