Abstract

Reading skill is the one of the most important competences in foreign language learning. However, eleventh-grade students often struggle to understand German texts, mainly due to limited vocabulary and a tendency to translate word to word. Furthermore, reading lessons that are still heavely reliant on textbooks cause the learning process to become less varied. This research aimed to develop a learning medium of Riddle Cards with the theme Hobbys to support German reading skill of eleventh-grade senior high school students. This study employed the Research and Development (R&D) method using the ADDIE model, limited to the Analyze, Design, and Develop phases. The Analyze phase was conducted through a literature review to identify German reading
learning needs in accordance with the Learning Outcomes of Phase F in the Merdeka Curriculum. The Design phase involved designing the Riddle Cards, which consist of riddle text cards and vocabulary cards with visual illustrations. The Develop phase included the development of the Riddle Cards prototypes and validation by subject matter expert and media expert. The validation showed that the development of the Riddle Cards media are categorized as highly feasible, obtaining a feasibility percentage of 100% from the subject matter expert and 96% from the media expert. The results indicated that Riddle Cards are suitable for use as an interactive printed visual medium to support German reading instruction on the theme of Hobbys.
