Abstract

The development of digital technology has encouraged the use of interactive learning media in foreign language education, including German language learning at the senior high school level. One of the digital learning media frequently used is Gimkit, a gamification-based learning application that provides various exercises, immediate feedback, and a high level of personalization. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of Gimkit in improving students' motivation to learn German reading skills among eleventh-grade students at SMAN 22 Surabaya. This study employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental method with a nonequivalent control group design. The participants consisted of two classes: an experimental class that used Gimkit and a control class that used audio-visual media (YouTube). The research instruments included learning motivation questionnaires administered during the pretest and posttest, observation sheets, and documentation. The results revealed a significant difference in learning motivation between the experimental and control groups. This finding was supported by the independent samples t-test, which produced a significance value of less than 0.05, as well as a higher mean posttest score in the experimental class. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that Gimkit is an effective digital learning medium for improving students' motivation to learn German reading skills.
