The Effect of Role Play Techniques on Improving German Speaking Skills Among 11th-Grade Students SMAN 15 Surabaya

Abstract

Speaking ability (Sprechen) is one of the essential skills that foreign language learners need to 

master. This skill is very important because it often causes a lack of confidence, especially 

among beginner learners. This study aimed to find out whether the role play technique had an 

effect on improving students' German speaking ability. Data in this study were collected 

through speaking tests conducted in the pretest and posttest stages. Descriptive data were 

analyzed based on the N-Gain Score, while the inferential hypothesis test used the MannWhitney U Test with the help of the SPSS program. The descriptive results showed that the 

average N-Gain Score of the experimental class reached 0.25, higher than the control class, 

which only reached 0.14. However, the inferential results showed a significance value of 0.192, 

which was higher than 0.05. Therefore, the null hypothesis (H0) was accepted, meaning that 

statistically there was no significant difference in German speaking ability between the 

experimental and control classes.
