Abstract

Banquets are one of the essential cultures needed for human survival. The culture of eating develops from everyday life to become an inherent identity in a community environment. In a banquet event can display a picture of self-image which basically will always be maintained in the process of interaction with the influence of outside culture. The formulation of the problem in this study are (1) Why is a banquet held by the King at the Yogyakarta Palace? (2) What is the influence of European culture in the official banquet at the Yogyakarta Palace? (3) Why is the banquet a cultural identity of the Yogyakarta Palace? The purpose of this study was to explain the symbolic meaning of the banquet at the Yogyakarta Palace during the reign of Sultan Hamengku Buwono VIII (1921-1939). The method used is the historical approach method which includes other heuristic stages, criticism, interpretation and historiography. The results of this study indicate that, banquets are not only used as biological needs but are a picture of one's identity in the social life of society that will affect the conceptions and views of other individuals towards him. Cultural identity displayed in a banquet in an effort to align the culture possessed against the dominance of colonial culture that began to enter and influence through the process of mimicry. The symbolic meaning shown in visual or photographic evidence also displays the image of luxury and illustrates the socio-political position based on the creation of a banquet hall, the provision of a Gala Dinner party, menus, serving meals and the layout rules of the guests' dining positions.
