Abstract

Pulopancikan village is one of the oldest areas in Gresik that is mostly inhabited by Arabs, where at first they only stopped in the area until finally, these Arabs decided to settle in Gresik. The influence of the Arab community living in the Pulopancikan village has a considerable impact on the residents living in the vicinity because most Arabs have businesses such as making sarongs and caps. These efforts can have a better impact on the local economy.
This study discusses (1) the background of the first arrival of ethnic Arabs in Pulopancikan village; (2) the social and economic activities of ethnic Arabs who have played a role in the history of economic development in the region. This study aims to describe the background of the arrival of ethnic Arabs in the Pulopancikan village of Gresik and the second objective is to explain all social and economic activities carried out by all ethnic Arabs living in the region. This study used historical research methods which consist of four stages of research, namely heuristics (collection of sources), criticism (verification of sources), interpretation, and historiography (writing). The heuristic stage was used to obtain research sources in archives, journals, scientific articles, newspapers, books, and others used as support for this research. The critical stage in the form of source criticism was carried out to be able to see how authentic the source is and the credibility of the source to avoid falsehood. At the interpretation stage, this was done based on the literacy that has been found.
The results of this study indicate that the first arrival of ethnic Arabs in the Pulopancikkan village of Gresik Regency came from the arrival of the Hadramaut Arabs who initially only carried out trading activities which were also accompanied by carrying out Islamic da'wah until in the end, they settled in Pulopancikan Village. They also apply ways of carrying out economic activities to local people who live in the same area.
Keywords: community, Arab ethnicity, economy, social.
