FASHION HIP HOP DI KALANGAN REMAJA LAKI-LAKI SURABAYA TAHUN 1984-2000

Abstract

Hip hop is a culture that originated in the Bronx, New York and has major elements such as MCing (rapping), DJing, breakdancing, and graffiti. In its development, hip hop was equipped with other additional elements such as fashion which became popular among teenage boys all over the world, including in Surabaya. This study aims to analyze the background and development of hip hop fashion favored by teenage boys in Surabaya in 1984-2000. The research method used is a historical research method with heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography stages. The collection of sources was obtained through searches at the Surabaya State University Library, Medayu Agung Library, and interviews with historical witnesses or contemporaries.
The results of the study explain that hip hop fashion is favored by teenage boys in Surabaya as a medium to convey non-verbal messages including: showing their social identity and character as young people as well as showing their masculinity side. The development of hip hop fashion among teenage boys in Surabaya began when breakdancing became a trend in 1984. These clothes functioned as protection from injury during breakdancing. Continuing in the 90s, the success of hip hop in America and the presence of Indonesian hip hop music again managed to steal the attention of teenagers in the city of Surabaya. However, there are still not many who can become trendsetters in Surabaya because they are looking for an identity, so the hip hop fashion worn by teenagers in the 90s looks more simple. In 2000 until now, hip hop fashion has re-popularized a pre-existing trend from the west and has begun to refer to many hip hop styles. The b-boys are also one of the most influential indicators of hip hop fashion in Surabaya.
