Abstract

Taman Sari compx is a water palace (watercastel) which was built with the aim of being a palace of recreation
and a bathing pool for the Sultan of Yogyakarta and the Sultan’s relatives. Pesanggrahan Taman Sari is a historical site
that shows the power of nagari Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat Sultanate at the time. The change in the function of the Taman
Sari complex began in 1972 on the orders of Sri Sultan Hamengkubowono IX. The focus of this research is to discuss the
change of the private function of the Taman Sari complex into a public function.
This study was structured using a historical research method consisting of four stages namely, (1) Heuristic is the
process of collecting historical sources through interviews conducted with courtiers of the Yogyakarta Palace and the
community around the Taman Sari complex (2) Source criticism or verification serves to help researchers to sort out
sourced obtained through historical facts in the field (3) Interpretations the stage of analyzing and interpreting verified
historical sources (4) Historiography of the writing process of research results compiled based on valid sources that have
been obtained by researches.
The results of this study will answer the change in the function of the Taman Sari complex building which
originally had a private function for the Sultan and the Sultan’s relatives, turned into a public function. Right at the end of
the reign of Sri Sultan Hamengkubowono IX, the Taman Sari complex brought a lot of progress in the fields of tourism and
education. The Yogyakarta Palace’s attention to the maintenance of the Taman Sari complex paid off when the Taman Sari
Pesanggrahan site was awarded a cultural heritage in 1998
