Abstract

Opium, also known as Opium, is an item that is currently categorized as a narcotic drug (drug), in the past it was often used by the community for medicinal purposes. Consumption of opium or opium in ancient times received permission and was even facilitated by the colonial government. The colonial government even issued policies related to the opium monopoly in order to reap abundant profits. Policies to monopolize opium are regulated in such a way starting from opium management to opium consumption. Opium was so influential since the colonial period until at the beginning of independence that opium was also used by Indonesian fighters to be sold and the proceeds from the sale were used as funds for the struggle for independence. This thesis will discuss the management and consumption of opium, especially in Madura. This thesis uses the historical research method or historical method. There are four steps that must be taken in research using historical methods, namely heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. This research is intended to find out: (1) How was the socio-economic condition of Madura in 1894 to 1949? (2) How was the opium management policy in Madura in the nineteenth to early twentieth centuries? (3) How was the influence of opium sales in Madura from 1894 to 1949?
