Abstract

The historical heritage of Giri Kedaton is proof that there used to be an Islamic-based kingdom founded by Raden Ainul Yakin or better known as Sunan Giri. The existence of Giri Kedaton ultimately experienced total destruction from a spiritual, political and structural perspective. The destruction of Giri Kedaton resulted in the loss of historical relics of Sunan Giri and even the location of Giri Kedaton is unknown. This condition causes concern from various parties so that efforts are needed to revive it so that useful lessons can be drawn for the present and the future. This research was conducted at the Giri Kedathon Site which is located on Sunan Giri Street XIII, Hamlet, Kebomas, Kebomas District, Gresik Regency, East Java. Meanwhile, the time of this research was from 1973 to 2020. The election in 1973 was because it was the initial process of revitalization and in 2020 the establishment of Giri Kedaton as a cultural heritage after the issuance of a decree from the regent which could be used as a source of learning history. Based on the background above, the formulation of the problem was raised, namely (1) What was the background for the revitalization of Giri Kedaton in 1973-2020?, (2) What was the process of revitalizing Giri Kedaton in 1973-2020? And (3) How was the use of the revitalization of Giri Kedaton in 1973-2020 as a source for learning history? This research uses historical research methods consisting of (1) heuristics, (2) source criticism, (3) interpretation, and (4) historiography The results of this study explain that the background to the revitalization of Giri Kedaton in 1973-2020 was the concern about the loss of historical relics of Giri Kedaton because of the condition of Giri Kedaton before it was discovered in a state buried in a mound which left no trace of its whereabouts known. The people, especially children, do not know that in Gresik there is an Islamic empire founded by Sunan Giri. Even though Giri Kedaton has quite a big influence on Gresik City because its identity is known as Gresik, the city of guardians and the city of students and the day of Sunan Giri's inauguration as the leader of Giri Kedaton is made the anniversary of Gresik City. Giri Kedaton is a valuable asset for the City of Gresik, so it is necessary to carry out a revitalization effort to save the legacy of Sunan Giri so that it can be utilized. The revitalization process began in 1973 because it was the initial stage of submitting the Sunan Giri manuscript by Abah Mudlor as chairman of the Malang Islamic Research Institute to Achmad Khoiri Mustajib as chairman of the Sunan Giri Research and Restoration Committee. The revitalization process will end in 2020 because in that year Giri Kedaton officially became a cultural heritage after a decree issued by the Regent. The Giri Kedaton Revitalization activity provides considerable benefits by making the Giri Kedaton Site a source of historical learning about Islamic kingdoms in Indonesia by being designated as a cultural heritage by the Regent's Decree and becoming part of religious-based cultural tourism in Gresik Regency. The Giri Kedaton site is not only used as entertainment tourism but educational tourism. Students get a lot of learning that can be taken by involving themselves directly as actors in the activity of studying historical events to visualize historical facts that are at the Giri Kedaton Site. Because the Giri Kedaton site is one of the historical learning resources that can provide an overview of a concrete event to high school students related to the history of the Islamic period, especially the development of Islamic history in Gresik Regency.
