Kajian Historis: Toponimi Jalan Pacuan Kuda Surabaya Tahun 1925-1950

Abstract

Pacuan Kuda Street is one of the roads in the city of Surabaya which has undergone modernization from the development of the city of Surabaya. Surabaya Pacuan Kuda Street has a name that is quite unique. The naming of a road is not necessarily chosen randomly. There are certain elements why the name Pacuan Kuda which means “Horse Race” is immortalized in the street name. Pacuan Kuda Street has existed since the Dutch colonial era. Of course the Pacuan Kuda Street is also an example of the development of Surabaya urban planning. Toponymy is the study of place names. Toponymy is closely related to language, geography and also the history of a region. With historical research, the study of toponymy can answer the origin of the planting of a place.
From this background, the formulation of the problem is formed (1) What is the origin of the existence of the Surabaya Pacuan Kuda Street? (2) What is the toponymy of the Surabaya Pacuan Kuda Street? The results of this study are 1. The existence of the Pacuan Kuda Street has existed since 1926. The existence and toponymy of the Surabaya Pacuan Kuda Street cannot be separated from the role of the Soerabaasche Harddraverij-en Renvereeniging organization and the Surabaya city government. The Pacuan Kuda Street is the area of the Sawahan racing site. The Pacuan Kuda Street is an access road from the main street to the Sawahan race track. 2. The toponymy of the Pacuan Kuda Street has changed 2 times, namely in 1937 it was named Renbaanweg and in 1950 it was named Jalan Patjuan Kuda. The name of the Pacuan Kuda Street is based on the presence of a horse racing arena beside the road. Besides that, the naming of the Pacuan Kuda street was based on the nationalization factor which resulted in the changing of the Dutch language to Indonesian.
