Abstract

Every individual is required to have creative reasoning power and have a complex personality as complex as the situations they face. One of the school's efforts to meet the demands of the global era is to develop a learning model. For this reason, various learning models have been developed, one of which is the cooperative learning model. Based on the results of observations in class X of SMAN 1 Balongpanggang, it shows that teachers teach historical material only using conventional models, so the learning process is less fun and monotonous. In addition, the skills of communicating and historical critical thinking are also not paid enough attention to by the teacher in their implementation. So there is a need for a strategy, namely through the application of the talking chips type of cooperative learning learning model. This study aims to determine the effect of communication skills on critical thinking in terms of the improvement provided by the talking chips cooperative learning model. This research is a quantitative study using the Quasi Experimental Design research method. The form of the research design used is the Nonequivalent Control Group Design with the type of pretest-posttest control design. The sampling technique used purposive cluster sampling. The data analysis technique in this study used the Spearman Rank test and T test. Based on the Spearman Rank test calculations, a correlation coefficient value of 0.541 was obtained with a significance level of 0.000, so the decision making in the hypothesis test was that Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected so that it could be interpreted that there is a difference the results of communication skills and historical critical thinking between students who were treated with the cooperative learning model of talking chips and students who were treated with conventional learning models. This proves and it is concluded that there is an influence of the cooperative learning model of talking chips (X) on the communication skills (Y1) of students' historical critical thinking (Y2) in class X at SMAN 1 Balongpanggang.
