Abstract

This research departs from the low understanding of history possessed by students as a result of the lack of interest, activeness, learning outcomes and literacy of students. Meanwhile, if we look at the curriculum used, namely the Merdeka Curriculum which is known for its flexibility in developing learning so as to provide students with the opportunity to actively explore actual issues in order to build student character and competency development which is expected to be able to support the vision and restore Indonesian education. Based on these demands, teaching staff are required to find an appropriate learning method to increase students' understanding of history and not eliminate the characteristics of the independent curriculum. Therefore, this research aims to determine the effect of the open-ended learning method on students' level of understanding of history in the submaterial of the Welcome to the Proclamation of Indonesian Independence in the Indonesian History subject in class XI Busana SMK N 8 Surabaya. This research method uses a quantitative approach with a Pre-Experimental Design research design which was designed using the One Group Pretest-Posttest Design experimental method. The research subjects used in this research were class XI Clothing 1 students. Next, data analysis used the normality test, linearity test and sign test. Then the results of this research know that all the data used in this research is valid and reliable as proven by the results of the validity test R count for all data > R table at a significance of 0.05 and the results of the Cronbach's Alpha reliability test for all data > R table value. Apart from that, the open ended method was proven to have a significant relationship, this was proven by the zeromality test using the One sample Kolmogorov-Smrirnov test and the linearity test using the Anova table test where the significance result for all data was > 0.05 so it could be said that the data was normally distributed. and linear. The final stage is to test the hypothesis using a sign test so that it is known that the Exact Sig is 0.000, where this value is smaller than 0.05 so it can be concluded that there is a relationship between variable The sample tested revealed that there was 1 student who experienced a decrease in the level of student understanding, 23 students who experienced an increase in the level of student understanding and 1 student who was not affected. Thus, it can be concluded that applying the open ended method can have a positive effect on the level of historical understanding of class XI students at SMK Negeri 8 Surabaya with an increase of 93% of the entire student sample.
