NAHDLATUT TUJJAR: AKTIVITAS PERDAGANGAN UMAT ISLAM AWAL ABAD KE- 20 (1918-1926)
Abstract
The formation of Nahdlatut Tujjar in 1918 marked the start of Muslim trade activities among ulama and
merchants in East Java at the beginning of the 20th century. This research has three problems regarding, (1) What is the
background to the birth of Nahdlatut Tujjar at the beginning of the 20th century? (2) How are Nahdlatut Tujjar's trading
activities in the golden triangle route which includes Surabaya, Kediri and Jombang? (3) What is the influence of
Nahdlatut Tujjar on the revitalization and spirit passed on to Muslims? This research uses qualitative methods from library
sources (Library Research) to find historical information regarding Nahdlatut Tujjar trading activities on the golden
triangle route which covered the Surabaya, Kediri and Jombang areas in the early 20th century (1918-1926). This research
uses historical research methods by obtaining relevant historical sources, through criticizing historical sources,
interpreting historical sources, and rewriting them in historiography using analysis and description of historical facts that
are factually and chronologically relevant to the research topic. Nahdlatut Tujjar was formed as a response to the economic
power of modernist Islam and the exploitation of economic resources from Dutch colonialism. Nahdlatut Tujjar aims to
empower Muslim traders and encourage economic independence. Founded mainly by KH. Abdul Wahab Chasbullah and
led by KH. Hasyim Asy'ari, this organization facilitates trade in the "golden triangle" consisting of Surabaya, Kediri and
Jombang. By forming Syirkatul 'Inan, a cooperative-type company, Nahdlatut Tujjar sought to integrate Islamic teachings
into agricultural trade, strengthen socio-economic activities and encourage religious and educational efforts within the
Muslim community. Although it only existed for eight years, Nahdlatut Tujjar is an example of an important movement
that combined economic independence with Islamic principles, which was reflected in the social and political landscape
in Indonesia at the beginning of the 20th century.
