Abstract

ABSTRACT
Autism children had disturbance in speech skill especially in speaking skill. It happened because autism children had disturbance of pervasive development signed by the abnormality and defiant in three areas: a. social interaction, b. communication, and c. limited and repeated behavior (Sunartini, in Azwandi, 2005:16). Speaking skill of autism children could be developed by early intervention. To get maximum result, early intervention toward the autism children should be done before the children aged five years because the rapid development of human brain happened before five years old (Handojo, 2008:28). In fact, the autism children in Indonesia however often got intervention five years old above so that the intervention result was less maximum.
The characteristics and speaking skill on the normal children of 9-12 years old were having knowledge of 80.000 words, mastering many vocabularies specifically relating with variety of academic discipline, syntaxes improvement, many conjunctions mastery, and understanding implicit language (Ormrod, 2008:72). In fact, the field indicated that the autism children of 9-12 years old had disturbance in speaking skill signed by low in beginning the question, responding, and responding the conversation.
Developing speaking skill was done more effectively by direct communication (David Nunan in Santosa, et al., 2011:236). Therefore, it needed learning approach which applied direct communication in its learning step. One of them was communicative approach. Therefore, the research purpose was to know the influence of communicative approach toward speaking skill to the second class of autism children in SLB Autist Mutiara Hati Sidoarjo.
This research used quantitative approach and pre experiment kind with “one group pretest – posttest design”. The data collection method used test and the data analysis technique used statistic non parametric of sign test. The data analysis indicated ZH = 2,05 > Z table = 1,96 to 5% significant level (two sides testing) so it could be concluded that there was significant influence of communicative approach toward speaking skill to the second class of autism children in SLB Autist Mutiara Hati Sidoarjo.
