Limitation of intellectual function and adaptation cause mild mentally retarded student’s adaptation in their
habits and find a job skills hampered. So, the best education for mild mentally retarded student is skill for trained
student be autonomous in their society. One of them is cooking skills. This research aim to analyze the mild mentally
retarded student’s cooking skill before and after applying peer tutors.
This research is pre experiment research by using “pre-test post-test” design. Subject in this research is six
mild mentally retarded students, consist of two person of VII grade students, two person of VIII grade students, two
person of IX grade students with similar skills level. Methods of data collection in this research are observation and
documentation. Analysis of the data used in this research is sign test.
Based on the data analysis which based on the collected data in the pre-test and post-test, it can be concluded
that the student’s average score in pre-test is 61,89. After applying peer tutors in the treatment, the students’s average
score in post-test is 77,52. It shows that the children’s post-test score is better than their pre-test score. The next step is
conducting sign test. The Zh is 2.04. It is bigger than the critical score of α = 5% and its error level for 1.64. Therefore
the alternate hypothesis (Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected). It can be concluded that there is significant effect between
peer tutors and mild mentally retarded student’s cooking skills at SMP Negeri 4 Gresik East Java.
