Abstract

ABSTRACT

Storytelling is a speaking ability in which the speaker tells his/her experiences or events in sequence or chronologically. In fact, the low retarded children have barriers of storytelling. If the barriers are not directly addressed, they will hinder the ability to tell more. The low retarded children is a group of children who has low intellectual level and has to be educated simply. Therefore, they need a direct instructional model that gives them the opportunity to learn by observing selectively, remembering and imitating what the teacher has modeled.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the presence or absence of the effect of direct learning model on the low retarded children’s storytelling ability. This research uses a pre experimental research. There were 8 meetings with 6 times intervention. The design of the study is one group pretest posttest design with 6 students as sample. The data were collected by tests and documentation. The data were analyzed using non-parametric statistical analysis with the sign test.

The results of analysis using sign test formula show Z observed (Zh) at 2.05, while the value of the Z table in a 5% significance for testing the two tails (Zt = 1.96), thus H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted (1.96 <2:05> 1.96). Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the direct learning model has an effect on the low retarded children’s story telling ability in AC Dharma Wanita Special School (SLB) Sidoarjo.
