Abstract

ABSTRAK

Vocabulary development was begun since the children were in one year old. By interacting with the environment around the children slowly developed their ability in understanding vocabulary concerning with the object and the event around. It was quite different with autism children because they had speech and speaking disturbance which caused the children less ability in interacting with the environment around so the vocabulary owned was limited than the normal children. Vocabulary was repertory word which was defined as ability to use language in a number of forms to communicate. To develop the vocabulary mastery of autism children, it required exact learning strategy or learning method, in this research it had been used phonic method as the exact method to enhance the vocabulary mastery of autism children.

This research used experiment of Single Subject Research with reversal design i.e. A-B-A design consisted of three condition phases, those were: Baseline phase (A1) was done for 6 sessions, Intervention phase (B) was done for 9 sessions, and Baseline phase (A2) was done for 6 sessions. This A-B-A design had indicated that there was cause and effect relationship between independent and dependent variables. The subjects in this research were 2 autism children in SLB autism Mutiara Hati Mojokerto, who had initial RJ and DW.

The research result after using phonic method to subject RJ was that stability percentage obtained from Baseline phase (A1) was 67%, Intervention phase (B) was 89%, and Baseline phase (A2) was 100% while for subject DW, the stability percentage obtained from Baseline phase (A1) was 33%, Intervention phase was 89%, and Baseline phase (A2) was 100%. The overlap percentage from subject RJ was 0% and 11% while for subject DW the overlap percentage was 0% and 22%. It meant that “there was influence of phonic method toward vocabulary mastery of autism children”.
