SENSORY INTEGRATION TERHADAP KEMAMPUAN BICARA ANAK TUNAGRAHITA SEDANG

Mental retarded child is a child who has the intelligence under the average intelligence. They have difficulties in speaking. This problem has relation with their cognitive skill. Therefore, their speaking problems must be minimized. Based on the field observation at Dharma Wanita inclusive school Lebo Sidoarjo, mental retarded children’s speaking skill is still moderate. The problems are in the form of unclear pronunciation, decision of stating only the last word, and saliva which is always produced. They often do not understand when they are communicating or being given question. Therefore, the sensory integration approach is used to minimize their speaking problem. It is because the sensory integration approach is in line with the mental retarded children’s characteristics.
Based on this background, this is a research aims to analyze the effect of sensory integration for moderate mental retarded children’s speaking skill at Dharma Wanita inclusive school C Lebo Sidoarjo. This research is a pre experimental research by using quantitative approach, single subjeck research and A-B reversal design. The data analysis is simple descriptive statistics.
The result shows that in the baseline phase (A), the moderate mental retarted children’s frequency in pronouncing, speaking, and stating the transportation is 3-7. This frequency shows the variable or instability. After applying the sensory integration approach, their speaking skill is improved as 9-1.
Based on the intra condition visual, it shows a better change. The inter condition visual shows the relation between conditions. It can be concluded that the sensory integration has a significant effect for the moderate mental retarded children’s speaking skill
