Abstract

The low level of critical thinking skills in every fifth-grade elementary school student is a problem that needs to be followed up. This problem is caused by a lack of variety in learning methods that can hone students' critical thinking skills. This research aims to determine the influence caused by the application of the Problem Based Learning learning model based on Socio Scientific Issues on the critical thinking skills of fifth-grade elementary school students. This research is quasi-experimental quantitative research or Quasi-Experimental Design in the form of Non Equivalent Control Group Design. The research instruments used in this research were critical thinking test sheets, observations of learning implementation, and questionnaires. Then the data was analyzed using instrument analysis techniques and data analysis techniques. This research was conducted at SD Muhammadiyah 16 Surabaya and SD Muhammadiyah 1 Menganti with class V subjects with a total sample of 86 students. The results of this research show that the SSI-based PBL model has an effect on students' skills, namely critical thinking, and is supported by the results of the N-Gain t-test for the experimental class and control class of t_count > t_table, namely 12.274 > 1.989 with a sig value. (2-tailed) of 0.000 < 0.05. The results of the hypothesis test showed that the hypothesis (H_0) is rejected, which means there is an influence from the application of the Problem Based Learning model based on Socio Scientific Issues on critical thinking skills.
