Abstract

Increasing environmental damage requires the implementation of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in elementary education as an effort to foster awareness of sustainability from an early age. However, the implementation of ESD in schools is often neglected. In addition, the presence of nature schools as a form of educational innovation with an environmentally based approach is considered in line with the principles of ESD. This study aims to examine how ESD is implemented in science learning, evaluate the achievement of sustainability awareness, and students' knowledge of subject matter integrated with sustainable development goals at SD Alam Citra Insani Lamongan. The approach used is descriptive exploratory with quantitative and qualitative data analysis methods through triangulation. The results of the study show that the implementation of ESD is realized through school policies, curriculum, and contextual learning strategies such as the Learning with Nature method. Science learning for grade 5 is designed in Design Learning Teaching (DLT) which integrates the concept of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with relevant learning materials. Based on the results of the questionnaire, the dimensions of students' attitudes and behaviors towards sustainability showed very high achievements (91.6%), but cognitive understanding of materials related to SDGs was still low with an average of 67.2 out of a standard of 75. This finding shows that although the implementation of ESD was successful in forming sustainable character, there needs to be strengthening of the cognitive aspect through a more interactive, contextual, and experience-based learning approach.
