HOW DO TRANSLATION TECHNIQUES REFRAME LOVE METAPHORS IN KESATRIA, PUTRI, DAN BINTANG JATUH?

This study explores the complexities of translating metaphors in Dee Lestari's novel "Kesatria, Putri, dan Bintang Jatuh" (Supernova: The Knight, The Princess, and The Falling Star), focusing on the challenges faced by translators in preserving the emotional and cultural nuances of love metaphors. Through a systematic analysis of 25 metaphorical expressions, the research identifies three types of metaphor: stock metaphor (12), original metaphor (7), and dead metaphor (6). In addition, the researcher find six distinct translation techniques: established equivalent, explicitation, discursive creation, deletion, and modulation. Findings reveal a predominant reliance on established equivalents, with 18 out of 25 metaphors retaining their integrity, while explicitation and discursive creation are employed to clarify implicit meanings and create culturally resonant imagery. The study highlights the delicate balance translators must maintain between fidelity to the source text and the need for cultural accessibility, ultimately underscoring the vital role of translation in bridging linguistic and emotional divides. This research contributes to the broader discourse on literary translation, emphasizing the importance of metaphor in shaping narrative and affective experiences.
