Abstract
Hockey is synonymous with expensive sports because you have to buy a stick and a
protector which is quite expensive. Hockey that uses equipment that is so complex that it
costs a lot of money is also in demand by the middle to lower class. There are several hockey
athletes who are members of the Surabaya hockey branch training center (PUSLATCAB)
who come from a poor family background, even though this sport requires a lot of money to
fulfill the equipment and accessories while the income of the poor is only enough to meet
their consumptive needs. or even lack. By participating in this sport, they are required to
fulfill the equipment and sports equipment at a cost that is not small. The purpose of this
study is to identify the background and goals to be achieved by research subjects in pursuing
hockey. The method in this research is qualitative research using the phenomenological
approach of Alfred Schutz's ideas. Alfred Schutz's phenomenology is used to study the
because motive (cause motive) and in order to motive (objective motive) of informants who
are poor people in pursuing the sport of hockey. The results of the study were because the
informants' motive was involved in hockey because of their curiosity about hockey, being
motivated by other people and wanting to make their parents proud. Of course every action of
a person has a predetermined goal. in order to motive (goal motive) they want to pursue this
sport to gain achievements, continue their education, and become coaches to continue their
