USE OF LGA AND CALCIUM CARBONATE ON AC-WC PAVEMENT MIXTURES IN MARSHALL TEST

Abstract

Pavement quality plays a crucial role in supporting and distributing traffic loads, especially as vehicle numbers continue to increase. One method to improve pavement performance is by substituting materials in the asphalt mixture. This study examines the effect of using LGA natural asphalt and calcium carbonate filler in Asphalt Concrete-Wearing Course (AC-WC) mixtures, evaluated based on Marshall characteristics The experiment was conducted in a laboratory using asphalt content variations of 4%, 4.5%, 5%, 5.5%, 6%, 6.5%, and 7%. LGA natural asphalt was used as a substitute in the medium-sized aggregate, and calcium carbonate was added as filler at a constant 2%. The results showed that the optimum asphalt content (OAC) was 4.51%, with the following Marshall values: Voids in Mix (VIM) 3.92%, Voids in Mineral Aggregate (VMA) 16.04%, Voids Filled with Asphalt (VFA) 75.58%, stability 1080 kg, flow 2.45 mm, and Marshall Quotient (MQ) 440.78 kg/mm. These results meet the 2018 Bina Marga general specifications, indicating that LGA and calcium carbonate are suitable substitutes in AC-WC mixtures
