Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy

Jurnal Pendidikan Ekonomi (JUPE) recognizes that generative artificial intelligence (AI) and AI-assisted technologies are increasingly used in academic research, writing, and scholarly publishing. JUPE supports the responsible and transparent use of such technologies while maintaining the principles of research integrity, academic originality, confidentiality, accountability, and ethical scholarly communication.

Generative AI may be used as a supportive tool; however, it must not replace the intellectual contribution, critical thinking, scholarly judgment, or accountability of human authors, reviewers, and editors.

1. Use of Generative AI by Authors

Authors may use generative AI and AI-assisted technologies to support appropriate activities in the preparation of a manuscript, including:

• improving grammar, spelling, language, and readability;
• assisting with translation;
• improving the clarity and organization of author-written text;
• assisting with brainstorming or developing research ideas;
• assisting with literature exploration or information organization;
• assisting with coding or programming, provided that the output is independently verified; and
• supporting the preparation of figures, tables, or other scholarly materials where such use is ethically and legally appropriate.

AI tools must be used only as supportive technologies and must not substitute for the authors' intellectual contribution, critical evaluation, or scientific judgment.

Authors remain fully responsible and accountable for the entire content of their manuscript, including any content produced or modified with the assistance of AI.

Authors must independently verify all AI-assisted output because generative AI systems may produce inaccurate, incomplete, biased, or fabricated information, including fictitious references and citations.

 

2. Disclosure of Generative AI Use

Authors must disclose the use of generative AI or AI-assisted technologies when such use makes a substantive contribution to the preparation or development of the manuscript.

The disclosure should specify:

• the name of the AI tool or service;
• the purpose for which it was used; and
• the nature or extent of the AI-assisted contribution.

Routine use of basic tools for spelling, punctuation, or minor grammar correction does not require disclosure. However, if an AI tool substantially modifies sentence structure, organization, meaning, or content, its use should be disclosed.

When AI is used as part of the research process—for example, for data analysis, coding, generation or modification of research materials, or other substantive research activities—the use should be described in the Methods section where appropriate.

This approach is consistent with current journal publishing practice, which distinguishes routine language correction from substantive AI assistance requiring disclosure.

 

3. AI Disclosure Statement

Where disclosure is required, authors should include a statement in the manuscript under the heading:

Declaration of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies

The following format is recommended:

During the preparation of this manuscript, the author(s) used [NAME OF AI TOOL/SERVICE] for [PURPOSE OF USE]. After using this tool/service, the author(s) reviewed and edited the content as necessary and take full responsibility for the accuracy, originality, integrity, and final content of the manuscript.

For example:

During the preparation of this manuscript, the authors used ChatGPT (OpenAI) to improve language clarity and readability. The authors reviewed and edited all AI-assisted content and take full responsibility for the accuracy, originality, integrity, and final content of the manuscript.

The disclosure should be placed before the References section, unless the Journal's manuscript template specifies otherwise.

 

4. Prohibited Uses of Generative AI

Authors must not use generative AI to:

• fabricate or falsify research data;
• manipulate research results or findings;
• fabricate references, citations, quotations, participants, observations, or research evidence;
• generate false or misleading research findings;
• conceal substantive AI-generated content where disclosure is required;
• plagiarize or reproduce copyrighted material without appropriate rights or attribution;
• misrepresent AI-generated content as the authors' original scholarly contribution;
• compromise the privacy or confidentiality of research participants;
• violate intellectual property rights; or
• otherwise breach research ethics or publication ethics.

AI-generated content must never be used as a substitute for independent scholarly judgment.

 

5. Undisclosed or Inappropriate Use of AI

Failure to disclose substantive use of generative AI when disclosure is required may constitute a breach of the Journal's publication ethics policy.

If inappropriate or undisclosed AI use is identified before or after publication, JUPE may request clarification or additional information from the authors and may take appropriate editorial action.

Depending on the nature and severity of the case, possible actions may include:

• requesting a correction or disclosure;
• requiring revision of the manuscript;
• rejecting the manuscript;
• issuing a correction or editorial notice;
• investigating potential research or publication misconduct; or
• taking other appropriate action in accordance with the Journal's publication ethics procedures.

The Journal reserves the right to investigate suspected violations of this policy.
