Abstract
This study aims to examine the role of caregivers in shaping the independence of students, examine the role of caregivers in developing life skills and describe the independence of students at the PKPPS Nasy'atul Barokah Foundation (PENABER) Bawean. The method used is descriptive qualitative research using data collection techniques in the form of observation, interviews and documentation. Data analysis uses data collection, data condensation, data presentation and conclusion drawing. The results showed the role of the caregiver as a role model, providing motivation and control by giving advice to students to form the real independence of students through life skills activities. The form of life skill activities taught in the form of batik, music, martial arts, animal husbandry and agriculture activities supported by adequate facilities. Independence can be seen with the attitude of students, namely 1) having freedom; 2) having initiative; 3) having self-confidence; 4) being responsible; 5) self-assertiveness; 6) decision making; and 7) self-control. The application of life skills activities in increasing the independence of students can provide provisions and become a source of inspiration for students when returning to society.
