Development of the Self-Assessment Anemia Screening Questionnaire (SAASQ)

Background: Anemia remains a significant global health problem, especially in non-pregnant women of childbearing age. Hemoglobin testing, the gold standard, is invasive and potentially hinders early detection. Therefore, a simple, self-administered, non-invasive anemia screening alternative is needed. Purpose: This study aimed to develop the Self-Assessment Anemia Screening Questionnaire (SAASQ). Methods: This study is a Research and Development (R&D) study with stages including goal setting, attribute definition, planning, and item development and writing. Result: The SAASQ was systematically developed with a multidimensional approach that integrates risk factors and common symptoms of anemia, thus providing a more comprehensive picture of anemia risk. This instrument is designed with simple language, a clear structure, and attention to readability to improve ease of use. Compared to previous instruments, the SAASQ has advantages in terms of efficiency, does not require clinical skills, and has the potential for widespread application. Conclusion: The SAASQ is a practical, self-assessment-based, non-invasive anemia screening instrument that has the potential to be used for early detection in non-pregnant women of childbearing age. However, questionnaire validity testing is needed to ensure psychometric quality before widespread use.
