Abstract

Abstract

A housewife who has a child with ASD is known to experience higher levels of stress than usual due to the intensive caregiving demands accompanied by household responsibilities that must also be completed. One factor that can help reduce this stress is gratitude. Therefore, this study aims to explore the process of gratitude development in housewives who have children with ASD. This study employed a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach to gain a deeper understanding of the participants’ subjective experiences. The participants in this study consisted of five housewives who have children with ASD, selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The results showed that the development of gratitude was influenced by three main factors, namely emotions and well-being, prosocial character, and spirituality and religiosity. This study indicates that gratitude is formed through an adaptive process involving various factors that also play an important role in helping mothers cope with parenting stress.
