The Influence of Nutrition Education On The Knowledge and Attitudes Towards Packaged Food Selection : A Case Study of Surakarta Handball Team

Abstract

Background: Athletes need adequate nutrition knowledge to maintain performance and make food choices that meet their nutritional needs, including when selecting packaged food products. Limited understanding of nutrition labels may lead athletes to make less appropriate decisions regarding their dietary intake. Nutrition education can be used as an effort to improve knowledge and foster more positive attitudes toward packaged food selection. Purpose: This study aimed to analyze the effect of nutrition education on knowledge and attitudes toward packaged food selection among handball athletes in Surakarta City. Methods: This quantitative study employed a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design. A total of 25 athletes were selected using total sampling. Nutrition education was provided in three online sessions via Google Meet using PowerPoint presentations. Knowledge and attitude data were collected through questionnaires administered before and after the intervention and were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Result: The mean knowledge score increased from 61.06 to 97.60, while the mean attitude score increased from 81.06 to 95.60. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test showed p < 0.001 for both variables. Conclusion: Nutrition education on packaged food selection had a significant effect on improving the knowledge and attitudes of handball athletes in Surakarta City.
